Gum disease is a serious and degenerative infection that can lead to several severe side effects. One of the most common side effects is gum recession. This is when you suffer from tissue loss and your tooth roots become exposed. Gum recession can be difficult to diagnose in the beginning stages, but here are some common signs associated with gum recession to look out for:
- Sensitive teeth: when the gums recede to the point of exposing the cementum that protects your roots, the sensitive dentin underneath registers external substances easier and stimulates pain neurons.
- Visible roots: if you can see your tooth’s roots, you have severe gum recession.
- Longer-looking teeth: those with gum recession have a more “toothy” smile. If your teeth begin to look longer than normal, it may be from gum recession.
- Halitosis, and inflamed or bleeding gums: common symptoms of gum disease are chronic bad breath, inflamed gums, and bleeding gums. If you experience any of these symptoms, your gums may begin to recede from gum disease.
Although gum recession is most often attributed to gum disease, there are several other reasons that can lead to gum recession. No matter the cause, gum recession can lead and contribute to gum disease and other problems. Some of the most common causes include:
- Aggressive brushing: over brushing or brushing too hard can cause your gums to recede. Be sure to use a soft-bristled tooth brush and brush gently.
- Poor oral hygiene: inconsistent or nonexistent oral hygiene habits, such as brushing and flossing, can increase the amount of bacteria in your mouth. This can build up and cause your gums to become infected and deteriorate.
- Chewing tobacco: all types of tobacco, but chewing tobacco in particular, have been shown to damage your oral health. Tobacco can aggravate your gums and cause them to recede.
- Periodontal disease: the increased amount of harmful bacteria that exist in your mouth from periodontal disease can eat away at your gums and result in gum recession.
